Why Lattice Semiconductor stock moved?

Updated Aug 18 at 5:05pm ET.

What's happening with the stock

Lattice fell about 7 percent today, its sharpest one-day drop in weeks, and now sits about 10 percent below its July high. We think this is mostly a sharp pullback after a big run, as the move was much larger than the broader slide in other chip stocks.

Our view

Lattice is growing fast and winning in AI data centers, but the stock price already assumes almost perfect execution for years to come. If you already own it, sit tight, but we would wait for a better price before adding more.

RBC Capital raises its target to $165

RBC Capital raised its price target for the stock from $140 to $165 while keeping a buy-equivalent rating. This move follows a quarter where the company beat expectations for both sales and profit.

Analysts often adjust their targets after earnings to reflect new data on how fast a company is growing. A target this much higher than the current price suggests the firm believes the business is successfully moving into more profitable markets like data centers.

Jefferies sets a $175 price target

Jefferies increased its price target from $145 to $175, maintaining a buy rating. This is one of the more optimistic views on the stock, sitting well above the average analyst target of $151.

When a firm raises a target by about 20 percent, it usually means they see a clear path for the company to earn more than previously thought. For this company, that likely stems from its ability to sell more complex chips into AI servers and industrial equipment.

Sales grew 62 percent in a record second quarter

Lattice reported record quarterly revenue of about 201 million dollars, which was 62 percent higher than the same time last year. Profits also came in ahead of what analysts expected, reaching 53 cents per share on an adjusted basis. The company is seeing strong demand for its chips in data centers and a recovery in its industrial business.

Management also gave a positive outlook for the next quarter, expecting sales of its programmable chips to grow about 65 percent. These chips are popular because they can be updated after they are installed, making them useful for fast-changing tech like AI. The stock fell about 7 percent despite the good news, which often happens when a stock's price has already risen a lot and investors decide to take profits.

Lattice completes the acquisition of AMI

Lattice has officially closed its acquisition of AMI, a company that makes firmware. Firmware is the specialized software that tells hardware how to start up and communicate with other parts of a computer system.

By owning this software, Lattice can offer a more complete package to its customers in data centers. Instead of just selling a chip, it can sell the chip and the software needed to manage it securely. This makes its products harder for customers to replace with a rival's chips later on.

New chip family wins an innovation award

The MachXO5-NX TDQ chip family won a technology award for its security features. These chips use post-quantum cryptography, which is a type of encryption designed to stay secure even against the massive processing power of future quantum computers. While industry awards are common, this highlights the company's focus on high-end security. As data centers and governments worry more about future hacking threats, having these features built directly into the hardware could help Lattice win more specialized contracts.

EPS$0.44$0.53+19.1%
Revenue$186M$201M+8.4%

Key highlights

  • Data center demand surges: The compute and communications segment grew to $126 million, up from $68.7 million a year ago, as artificial intelligence servers drove massive demand for the company’s chips. This division now makes up 63% of the total business, proving that the company is successfully winning a larger share of the high-growth AI infrastructure market.
  • Profitability hitting new highs: The adjusted gross margin, which is the percentage of sales left after production costs, rose to 71.7% compared to 69.3% in the same period last year. This expansion shows the company is selling higher-value products that command better pricing even as it scales its operations.
  • AMI acquisition complete: The company finished its $1.65 billion purchase of AMI, a software firm that helps manage and secure computer servers, using $1 billion in cash and $650 million in stock. This move is expected to add to earnings immediately and helps the company reach its goal of $1 billion in annual sales faster than it originally planned.
  • Cash flow generation strong: Free cash flow, which is the cash left over after paying for all business operations and equipment, jumped to $81.3 million from $31.3 million a year ago. This represents a 40.4% margin, giving the company significant flexibility to pay down the debt used for its recent acquisition.
  • Higher revenue outlook ahead: Management expects third quarter revenue to land between $245 million and $265 million, which includes a partial contribution from the newly acquired AMI business. This forecast represents roughly 65% growth in the core chip business compared to the same period last year, signaling that customer demand remains very robust.

Our take: This was an exceptional quarter that shows the business is hitting its stride. The 62% jump in revenue and the successful close of the AMI acquisition suggest the company is quickly becoming a critical player in the AI data center world. These results strengthen the case that its chips are winning more permanent spots in next generation technology.
